What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular recovery and performance. Unlike UV light which damages cells, these therapeutic wavelengths penetrate deep into tissue, stimulating the mitochondria (your cells' energy factories) to produce more ATP (cellular energy).

Not all red light is created equal. Different wavelengths penetrate different tissues and have different effects on your body. Here are the primary therapeutic wavelengths used in clinical and athletic settings:
630nm: Superficial Tissue and Skin Health
630nm is the shallowest of the four. It is absorbed close to the surface, which is why it is the wavelength studied for skin rather than for deep muscle. Photobiomodulation is an active research area in dermatology, acne included — that is research interest, not a treatment, so keep taking whatever your dermatologist prescribed. For athletes, 630nm is the one people book for facial work and surface-level soreness rather than for a sore hamstring.
660nm: Balanced Penetration and Performance
660nm penetrates further, into muscle and connective tissue, and it is the wavelength most of the athletic trials actually used — which is why it is the workhorse of the four. Members reach for it for general muscle soreness and post-training stiffness. Worth knowing: those trials lit a specific muscle group, and a whole-body bed is not the same exposure.
810nm: Deep Tissue Penetration
Moving into the near-infrared spectrum, 810nm light penetrates much deeper than visible red light. This wavelength reaches into muscle tissue and joints, which is why it is the one studied for deeper recovery. Athletes dealing with long-running aches, tendon niggles, or deep muscle soreness are the ones who reach for 810nm light therapy.
850nm: Maximum Penetration for Deep Recovery
850nm penetrates deepest of the four, reaching deep muscle structures and joint tissue. Athletes carrying deep muscle fatigue tend to favour it. Be aware that the evidence thins out as the depth increases — the well-run trials sit at the shallower, localised end, and if you are recovering from a real injury that is a conversation with your physio, not with a light bed.
How Red Light Stimulates Cellular Recovery
The mechanism of red light therapy is straightforward but powerful. When therapeutic wavelengths penetrate your tissue, they interact with cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in your mitochondria. This interaction stimulates the production of ATP, the energy currency that powers every cellular process in your body.
More ATP is the proposed reason athletes report faster recovery and less soreness. Hold the mechanism loosely: it is drawn from laboratory work, and what the clinical trials measure is the outcome, not the ATP.
Red Light Therapy for Athletic Recovery
This is where the evidence is strongest. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found photobiomodulation reduced post-exercise soreness and sped strength recovery, and trials consistently show lower creatine kinase and inflammatory markers afterwards. Two caveats worth knowing: most of those trials applied light to a specific muscle group rather than a whole-body bed, and the authors want larger studies. Among recovery modalities this is still the well-supported end of the scale.

Many elite athletes now use red light therapy as a standard part of their training and recovery protocol, alongside sleep, nutrition, and other modalities.
Red Light Therapy Beyond Recovery
While recovery is the primary benefit for athletes, red light therapy has broader applications. Randomised trials have measured increased collagen density and reduced fine lines over several weeks, and photobiomodulation is an active research area in dermatology, acne included. That is research interest, not a treatment: keep taking what your dermatologist prescribed.
You will also see claims about mood, sleep, and cognition. Those studies are early, small, and mixed. Interesting, not established, and we would rather you heard that from us than found it out later.
