What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is three minutes of extreme cold exposure, used as a recovery tool. At Bionic Barbell in Las Cruces, we use a fully electric whole-body cryotherapy chamber — no liquid nitrogen — that runs about -166°F, with three modes that can take the cabin from -145°F to -175°F. It is a wellness service, not a medical treatment.

The Science Behind Las Cruces' Only Cryotherapy Chamber

When your body is exposed to extreme cold, several physiological responses occur simultaneously. Blood vessels constrict, pushing nutrient-rich blood toward your core organs. Once you exit the chamber, the warming process triggers vasodilation, blood rushes back to your muscles, delivering oxygen and removing metabolic waste at an accelerated rate.

That rebound in circulation is the mechanism people point to when they talk about cryo and recovery. The process is non-invasive and takes three minutes. How much of the benefit is the cold itself, and how much is three deliberate minutes of doing nothing, is still an open question in the research.

The Numbers

  • - Temperature: -145°F to -175°F (three modes)
  • Duration: 3 minutes per session
  • Cooling Method: Forced air
  • Non-invasive, no downtime

Why Athletes & Fitness Enthusiasts Love Cryotherapy

At Bionic Barbell in Las Cruces, our cryotherapy members report noticeable improvements within days. Here's what the science actually supports, and where it doesn't.

Post-Workout Soreness

Members swear by three minutes after a heavy lift. Be straight with yourself about the evidence, though: the Cochrane review on cryo and muscle soreness found the trials too small and too few to call it either way.

Thermogenic Kick

Rewarming after extreme cold is work, and your body does spend energy doing it. What nobody has shown is that the amount matters for body composition, so don't book cryo as a weight-loss plan.

Sleep

A common piece of member feedback is sleeping better on cryo weeks. The published evidence is thin and mostly small studies, so file this one under worth trying rather than proven.

Enhances Mood & Energy

Cold exposure sets off a noradrenaline and endorphin response. That is the buzz you feel walking out, and most people describe it as awake and clear-headed for an hour or two afterwards.

The Cold Flush

Your skin goes bright as blood floods back to the surface on the rewarm, and it feels fantastic. We are not going to tell you it is an anti-ageing treatment. There is no evidence for that.

Antioxidant Response

Small studies report a rise in antioxidant activity, glutathione included, after repeated cold exposure. It is an interesting signal, not a proven health outcome, and it has nothing to do with flushing toxins.

Three Minutes, Not Thirty

The practical case for a chamber over an ice bath is time. Three minutes, dry, dressed, done. That is why people actually keep doing it instead of quietly abandoning it in week three.

Athletic Performance

Cryo is a fixture in NFL, NBA, and Olympic recovery rooms. Whether it beats a good night's sleep for delayed-onset soreness is still argued over in the literature, but the pros keep the chambers.

Cryotherapy FAQs

Is cryotherapy safe?

For most people, yes. Sessions are brief, staff supervise every one, and most users have no trouble at all. Two honest caveats. First, no whole-body cryotherapy device is FDA-cleared or approved to treat any medical condition, and the FDA has said its healing benefits are unconfirmed. It is a wellness service. Second, it is not for everyone. Skip it, or clear it with your doctor first, if you are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a heart condition, a history of stroke or migraine, cold urticaria or Raynaud's, severe cold sensitivity, or open wounds. Documented adverse events are rare but real, frostbite and skin reactions among them, which is exactly why we brief you and stay at the door.

How cold does the chamber get?

The cryotherapy chamber at Bionic Barbell in Las Cruces is fully electric — no liquid nitrogen — and runs about -166°F, with three modes that can take the cabin from -145°F to -175°F. We cap sessions at three minutes as gym policy, well within the machine's 2-3.5 minute supported range, precisely because the cold is that extreme: it chills skin, not your core. You'll feel it immediately, but it's invigorating rather than painful. Many clients describe it as "intense but energizing."

How often should I do cryotherapy?

For optimal results in Las Cruces, most clients use cryotherapy 2-3 times per week, though frequency depends on your training intensity and recovery needs. Some elite athletes use it daily. VIP members at Bionic Barbell have unlimited access, but more is not automatically better and nobody has established an optimal dose. Start with 1-2 sessions per week and adjust based on how you feel.

What should I wear during a cryotherapy session?

We provide shorts and a sports bra for comfort. You'll also wear gloves (to protect your hands) and socks (to protect your feet). Minimal clothing is ideal because the cold therapy works on exposed skin. Remove any metal jewelry before entering the chamber, as metal conducts cold and can become uncomfortable.

Can seniors do cryotherapy?

Many do. Seniors in Las Cruces use cryotherapy for stiff joints and everyday soreness, and the circulation response is a big part of the appeal. It is not a treatment for arthritis or any other condition. Check with your doctor first if you have a heart condition, blood-pressure issues, or a history of stroke, and tell our staff so we can point you at the right modalities.

Do I need a VIP membership to use cryotherapy?

No. Cryotherapy is available to all Bionic Barbell members in Las Cruces. Basic members ($49.99/mo) can purchase individual sessions or packages. VIP members ($99.99/mo) get unlimited cryotherapy access included, making VIP the better value if you plan to use it regularly.
