If you have UnitedHealthcare insurance, you may already be paying for a gym membership you are not using. Depending on your plan type, UHC offers several fitness programs that can get you into a gym at no cost or at a significant discount. And if you are on New Mexico Medicaid through UnitedHealthcare, you may qualify for a completely free gym membership that most people do not even know exists.
At Bionic Barbell in Las Cruces, we work with UnitedHealthcare members every day to help them access the fitness benefits they are already entitled to. This guide covers every UHC fitness program available right now, how to enroll in each one, and exactly how to use them here in Las Cruces.
The Short Version
- Medicare Advantage: Free gym through Renew Active (25,000+ locations nationwide)
- NM Medicaid (Turquoise Care): Free gym through OnePass (24,000+ locations)
- Employer / ACA plans: Discounted access through OnePass Select
- All UHC members: $40/month direct discount at Bionic Barbell with proof of coverage
Free Gym Membership Through NM Medicaid: The Benefit Most People Miss
This is the benefit we want every New Mexican to know about. If you receive Medicaid in New Mexico and your plan is managed by UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, you are enrolled in what is called Turquoise Care. And Turquoise Care includes a free fitness membership through a program called OnePass.
OnePass is operated by Optum and is the largest national Medicaid fitness network in the industry. It gives qualifying members no-cost access to a network of over 24,000 gyms and fitness centers across the country. That includes locations from national chains like Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, Gold's Gym, LA Fitness, and the YMCA, along with many independent and boutique studios.
In other words: if you have NM Medicaid through UHC, you can walk into a participating gym, show your OnePass member code, and work out for free. No enrollment fee. No monthly dues. No catch.
How to Enroll in OnePass (NM Medicaid)
- Get your member code online: Go to youronepass.com and click "Get Member Code." Enter your name and date of birth, and the system will generate your unique OnePass member code.
- Or call for your code: You can also call OnePass Member Services at 1-877-504-6830 (TTY/TDD: 711), Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Find a participating gym: On the OnePass website, click "Find a Gym Near You" and enter your Las Cruces zip code (88011) to see which locations near you accept OnePass.
- Visit the gym: Bring your OnePass member code to the front desk. The staff will verify your eligibility and enroll you on the spot. There is no enrollment fee or initiation fee.
- Start working out: You have immediate access once enrolled. You can use the gym as often as you want, and you can visit multiple participating locations with the same member code.
Not sure if your Medicaid plan qualifies? Call UnitedHealthcare Community Plan Member Services at 1-877-236-0826 (TTY 711) and ask whether your Turquoise Care plan includes the OnePass fitness benefit. You can also call us at Bionic Barbell at (575) 202-6498 and we will help you figure it out.
Renew Active: Free Gym for UHC Medicare Advantage Members
If you are enrolled in a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan, you likely have access to Renew Active, a comprehensive fitness and wellness program available at no additional cost. Renew Active is one of the most generous Medicare fitness programs in the industry.
What Renew Active Includes
- Free gym membership at a fitness location you choose from a national network of over 25,000 participating gyms and fitness centers
- Group fitness classes at participating locations, including yoga, tai chi, strength training, cardio, and more
- On-demand workout videos and live streaming fitness classes you can do from home
- Brain health program through AARP Staying Sharp, including cognitive assessments, lifestyle check-ins, and interactive challenges
- Community activities like walking groups, pickleball, and local wellness events
- No enrollment fees at participating gym locations
Many premium gyms and fitness centers participate in the Renew Active network, offering members access to equipment, classes, and amenities at no cost. You can even use multiple locations during the same month.
How to Sign Up for Renew Active
- Confirm eligibility: Check that your specific UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan includes the Renew Active benefit. Not all Medicare Advantage plans include it, so verify by calling the number on the back of your member ID card or logging in at uhc.com.
- Get your confirmation code: Log in to your UnitedHealthcare member account online or through the UHC app. Go to Health & Wellness, then select Fitness. Your Renew Active confirmation code will be displayed on the Fitness page. The code starts with a letter followed by 9 digits.
- Find a gym: While logged in, scroll down to "Browse Gyms and Activities" and enter your zip code to find participating locations near you in Las Cruces. You can also search at uhcrenewactive.com/location.
- Visit your chosen gym: Bring your Renew Active confirmation code to the front desk. The staff will use it to activate your free membership.
- Activate brain health: Use the same confirmation code to create your AARP Staying Sharp account for the brain fitness component of the program.
Need help finding your code? You can call UnitedHealthcare Customer Service at 1-855-604-1588 for Renew Active enrollment assistance. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, 365 days a year.
Dual Eligible? You May Get Both Programs
If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (known as "dual eligible"), UnitedHealthcare offers Dual Complete plans (D-SNP) in New Mexico. These plans combine the benefits of both programs, which means you may have access to both Renew Active and the fitness benefits that come with your Medicaid coverage. In New Mexico, the 2026 UHC Dual Complete plans (NM-S1 and NM-Y1 PPO D-SNP) include a standard fitness membership at participating locations.
If you have dual eligibility, contact UnitedHealthcare Member Services to understand which fitness programs are available under your specific plan combination.
OnePass Select: Discounted Gym for Employer and ACA Plans
If you have UnitedHealthcare through your employer or through an ACA marketplace plan, you may have access to OnePass Select. Unlike the free Medicaid and Medicare versions, OnePass Select is a subscription-based fitness program with tiered pricing. However, it is still a significant value compared to paying full gym membership prices on your own.
OnePass Select Membership Tiers
- Digital: Access to on-demand and livestream classes from home
- Classic: Approximately $34/month + $29 enrollment fee. Access to 12,000+ gym locations and digital classes.
- Standard: Approximately $69/month + $29 enrollment fee. Access to 14,000+ locations.
- Premium: Approximately $109/month + $29 enrollment fee. Access to 16,000+ locations including premium facilities.
- Elite: Approximately $249/month + $29 enrollment fee. Access to 20,000+ locations including luxury gyms.
OnePass Select is available through participating employers and health plans. Check with your HR department or call the number on your UHC member ID card to see if your plan includes OnePass Select and whether your employer subsidizes any of the cost.
Digital Fitness Through UHC
Beyond gym access, UnitedHealthcare offers digital fitness options depending on your plan type:
- Renew Active digital content: Thousands of on-demand workout videos and live streaming fitness classes, included at no cost for Medicare Advantage members with the Renew Active benefit.
- OnePass digital classes: Over 15,000 on-demand and livestreaming classes available to OnePass members, covering yoga, strength, cardio, HIIT, and more.
- Aaptiv: UHC has integrated Aaptiv fitness technology into its platform. Depending on your plan, you may have access to AI-powered personalized workouts, on-demand wellness classes for sleep, meditation, stretching, and mobility, plus nutrition articles and meal planning tools. Some Medicare and Medicaid plans include Aaptiv Advantage at no cost.
- Calm Health app: Available at no cost to UnitedHealthcare Community Plan members in New Mexico for mental health and well-being support.
These digital tools are a great supplement to in-person gym visits, especially on days when you cannot make it to the gym.
