What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (photobiomodulation) uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular energy production. Unlike UV, red and near-infrared light carries no ionising energy: it passes through skin into the tissue underneath without damaging it.

The Science of Light Therapy

When light energy at the right wavelengths reaches your cells, it stimulates the mitochondria, your cells' energy factories. The proposed chain from there is more ATP, then faster recovery and less inflammation. Hold the mechanism loosely: it comes from laboratory work, and what the clinical trials actually measure is the outcome, not the ATP.

The appeal of red light therapy is how undemanding it is: no pain, no downtime, and a strong safety record at therapeutic doses. Use it before a workout or after — most members do both at different points in the week. Wear the goggles, and tell us if you are on a photosensitising medication.

All 4 Wavelengths

  • 630nm (Red), Skin health, circulation
  • 660nm (Deep Red), Muscle recovery
  • 810nm (NIR), Deep tissue penetration
  • 850nm (NIR), Deepest penetration, joints

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Red light is the best-evidenced thing in our recovery suite. Here is what holds up, and what is still early.

Reduced Inflammation

Trials consistently show lower creatine kinase and inflammatory markers after photobiomodulation. That is the measurable side of feeling less beaten up the next day.

Skin Health & Anti-Aging

Randomised trials have measured increased collagen density and reduced fine lines after several weeks of consistent red-light sessions. It builds slowly: think weeks, not one visit.

Joint & Tendon Comfort

Meta-analyses of red and near-infrared light for tendinopathy report modest improvements in pain and function. Knees, shoulders, and elbows are what members point the panel at most.

Improved Circulation

Increased local blood flow is a commonly cited photobiomodulation mechanism, offered as one explanation for the recovery and skin effects above. It is a proposed pathway from laboratory work, not something the human trials measure as a stand-alone outcome.

Ten Minutes To Yourself

A session is ten to twenty minutes lying still with your phone out of reach. Members describe it as the calmest part of their day, and unlike the sleep claims you will see elsewhere, that one we can actually vouch for.

Skin Conditions

Photobiomodulation is an active research area in dermatology, acne and inflammatory skin conditions included. That is not the same as a treatment: keep taking what your dermatologist prescribed and treat this as a complement.

Cognitive & Mood Support

This is the frontier and we will flag it as such. Early studies are looking at near-infrared light and brain tissue, with small samples and mixed results. Interesting. Not established.

Wound & Scar Healing

Photobiomodulation is used clinically for wound care and radiation dermatitis, and it is studied for scar formation. If you have a surgical site, get your surgeon's sign-off before you point a light panel at it.

Who Is Red Light Therapy For?

Red light suits people playing a long game: aging joints and skin, patient rehab, and hard-training physiques.

Seniors

Easy on stiff joints, gentle on skin, and nothing to brace against — you lie down. Popular with our over-60 members as a low-impact part of the week.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Photobiomodulation is used in clinical wound care, which is why members ask about it post-op. Ask your surgeon before you start. That call is theirs, not ours.

Bodybuilders

The recovery evidence is strongest for exactly this: less soreness and faster strength return between heavy sessions.

Red Light Therapy FAQs

Is red light therapy safe?

For most adults, yes. It is non-invasive, uses visible and near-infrared light with no UV, and a 2025 evidence-based consensus in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found photobiomodulation well tolerated at therapeutic doses. Wear the eye protection we provide. Check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, have a photosensitivity condition such as lupus, or take a photosensitising medication — certain antibiotics, retinoids, and diuretics are the common ones.

How often should I use red light therapy?

For optimal results, 3-5 sessions per week is ideal, with 10-20 minute sessions. Daily use is common and generally well tolerated. More is not better, though: photobiomodulation has a dose-response curve, and piling on extra minutes does not add benefit. Many clients start with 2-3 times per week and adjust to their training.

What should I wear during a red light therapy session?

You can wear normal gym clothes. For maximum benefit, position exposed skin (arms, legs, face) toward the light. Remove any jewelry or metal objects that might block the light. The more exposed skin, the more of you gets the light, so tank tops and shorts are ideal.

How long until I see results?

Many clients report feeling reduced muscle soreness within 2-3 sessions. Skin improvements typically appear within 2-4 weeks of consistent use. Joint and mobility benefits usually develop over 3-6 weeks. Results are cumulative, so regular sessions produce the best outcomes.

Does insurance cover red light therapy?

Most standard health insurance plans do not cover red light therapy through gym memberships. However, if red light therapy is prescribed by a doctor for a specific medical condition, some insurance companies may provide partial coverage. Check with your insurance provider for your specific plan details.
